DIY vs store-bought: How to make your own beef jerky

Are you a fan of beef jerky, but tired of the limited flavor options and high prices at your local convenience store? Why not try making your own beef jerky at home?

Not only is homemade beef jerky a cost-effective option, but it also allows you to experiment with a wide range of flavors and customize the spice level to your liking. Plus, making your own beef jerky is a fun and satisfying DIY project that can be enjoyed by the whole family.

To get started, you'll need a few key ingredients and tools:

  • High-quality beef: Choose a lean cut of meat such as top round or flank steak, and trim off any excess fat.

  • Seasoning and spices: This is where you can get creative and customize the flavor of your beef jerky. Try a classic blend of salt, pepper, and garlic powder, or experiment with different herbs and spices such as paprika, cumin, or cayenne pepper.

  • A dehydrator or oven: Dehydrators are specifically designed for making beef jerky and will produce the best results, but an oven can also be used.

Once you have all your ingredients and equipment ready, follow these simple steps to make your own delicious beef jerky:

  1. Cut the beef into thin strips, about 1/4 inch thick and 2-3 inches long. This will help the meat to dry evenly and quickly.

  2. In a large bowl, mix together your seasonings and spices to create your jerky marinade.

  3. Place the beef strips in the marinade, making sure they are well coated. Cover the bowl and let the beef marinate in the refrigerator for at least 2-3 hours, or overnight for best results.

  4. Preheat your dehydrator or oven to 165 degrees Fahrenheit.

  5. Arrange the marinated beef strips on the dehydrator racks or on a wire rack placed on top of a baking sheet. Make sure the strips are not touching and have plenty of space for air circulation.

  6. If using a dehydrator, follow the manufacturer's instructions for drying time, which can range from 4-12 hours depending on the thickness of the meat and the desired level of chewiness. If using an oven, bake the beef jerky for 2-3 hours, checking every 30 minutes and flipping the strips over to ensure even drying.

  7. Once the beef jerky is dry and firm to the touch, remove it from the dehydrator or oven and let it cool completely.

  8. Store the homemade beef jerky in an airtight container or zip-top bag at room temperature for up to 2 weeks, or in the refrigerator or freezer for longer storage.

Making your own beef jerky is a fun and satisfying DIY project that allows you to experiment with a wide range of flavors and customize the spice level to your liking. Plus, it's a cost-effective option that can save you money compared to store-bought beef jerky.
